Porto Card and Porto tickets: is the city card worth it?

What the Porto Card is, and its status in September 2026

The Porto Card (branded Porto.CARD) is the official city pass of the Porto and North tourism association. It is not a ticket you show at a turnstile; it is a discount card. Six municipal museums are free with it, and roughly 130 partners take 10–50 % off, including Torre dos Clérigos, Palácio da Bolsa, port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, Douro boat trips, Serralves and the hop-on hop-off bus, according to the official sales page.

Two things changed recently. The version with an Andante transport pass bundled in was withdrawn in 2025, so the card no longer covers metro or buses. And since the beginning of July 2026 the official page has carried a notice that the Porto.CARD is “temporarily unavailable” because of a “product restructuring process”. As of September 2026 no relaunch date has been published.

The clock starts at first use: staff write the date and time on the card when you first present it, per the official FAQ. A 24-hour card activated at 15:00 on Tuesday still works at 14:00 on Wednesday.

What was free and what was discounted

• Free entry: Casa do Infante, Casa-Museu Guerra Junqueiro, Casa-Museu Marta Ortigão Sampaio, Museu do Papel Moeda, Museu do Vinho do Porto and the Museu Romântico (the last one has been closed for renovation; check museudoporto.pt). The official FAQ notes these museums are free for everyone on Sundays, card or not.
• 50 % off: Torre dos Clérigos (confirmed on the tower’s own ticket office page), Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis, the Military Museum, the tram museum and several municipal theatres.
• 25 % off: Palácio da Bolsa, Igreja de São Francisco, Casa da Música tours, the hop-on hop-off bus.
• 20–35 % off: Serralves (20 %), Sea Life (30 %), World of Discoveries (35 %).
• Port wine cellars: 10–50 % on visits or tastings, varying by house and season; Douro cruises: typically 10–20 %.

These percentages come from the last partner list published before the suspension; only the Clérigos figure could be re-checked on a venue site. Treat the rest as indicative until the card is relaunched.

Porto tickets compared: Porto Card, Andante cards and pay-as-you-go

Pick the Porto Card only if it is on sale and you will use two 50 % partners in a day, or a run of museums over three or four days. It never replaces transport, so pair it with an Andante product or walk; the historic centre is compact enough that many visitors never ride the metro after the airport.

Pick Andante Tour if the airport metro is part of your plan. It covers the whole intermodal network (Metro do Porto, STCP buses, suburban CP trains) for 24 or 72 consecutive hours, but not the Funicular dos Guindais or the heritage tram, per andante.pt.

Pick pay-as-you-go if your list is Livraria Lello, a Six Bridges cruise, a cellar tasting and the bridge. Lello sells its own voucher ticket, cruises and cellars are cheaper as a combo, and Ponte Luís I is free.

Timing is everything: when a Porto Card pays and when it does not

Sunday is the card’s weak day. The municipal museums that make up its “free” list are free for everybody on Sundays, per the official FAQ, so a card activated on a Sunday only earns its price through the discount partners. Activate on a weekday and keep Sunday for the free museums.

Monday is the museum closure day. Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, per the museum’s official page. Torre dos Clérigos opens daily 09:00 to 19:00 and Palácio da Bolsa runs guided tours 09:00 to 18:30 with last entry at 18:30, per their official pages, so those two carry a Monday.

Because a 24-hour card runs across two calendar days, activate it mid-afternoon on day one: Clérigos and a museum before closing, then Bolsa and a cellar the next morning before it expires.

High season (June to September) does not change the card price, but it changes queues. A discount does not skip the line at Clérigos, so arrive at opening or after 17:00.

How to save on Porto tickets without the card

• Children: under 10 free at Torre dos Clérigos and under 12 free at Palácio da Bolsa when with parents, per their official ticket pages. Under-4s ride Metro do Porto free with a ticketed adult, per the operator’s passenger rules.
• Students: €7 instead of €10 at Clérigos with a valid student card, per the ticket office page. Most museums have a reduced rate; ask before paying.
• Sundays: the six municipal museums on the Porto Card list are free for everyone.
• Combo tickets: the Clérigos ticket office sells a Tower + Palácio da Bolsa + MMIPO (Misericórdia museum) pack for €25 and a Tower + Serralves pack for €27.20, per the same page. Compare these with the card’s 50 % / 25 % before buying either.
• Cruise + cellar bundles: the Six Bridges cruise with a port wine cellar option is listed at €18 on GetYourGuide (September 2026), cheaper than a card discount on the two bought separately.
• Andante ten-trip bonus: buy ten single trips on an Andante Azul card and the eleventh is free, per andante.pt. Useful for groups sharing one journey type.

What is not worth paying for: a reseller’s “Porto Card with transport” bundle while the official card is suspended, and hop-on hop-off day passes if you plan to stay in the centre and Gaia. Read the hop-on hop-off guide before adding the bus to any pass.

Is the Porto Card worth it? Three worked examples

The maths uses the last official card prices, official venue prices where published (Clérigos €10, Soares dos Reis €10) and the percentages from the last partner list. Re-run the sums once the card returns.

Example 1: one day, two 50 % partners

Torre dos Clérigos €10 and Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis €10 cost €20 at the door. With 50 % off each you pay €10, saving €10 against a €7.50 card: net gain €2.50, plus any free municipal museum you add. It only works Tuesday to Saturday because of the Monday closure and the free Sunday.

Example 2: one day, the classic first-timer list

Clérigos, Livraria Lello, a cellar tasting in Gaia and a Six Bridges cruise. Only Clérigos gives a hard €5 saving; Lello is not a partner, and 10–20 % off a cruise-plus-cellar bundle that already costs about €18 via partner saves a euro or two. Total saving roughly €7 to €9 against a €7.50 card: break-even at best, so skip it.

Example 3: three days, museum pace

Day one Clérigos (save €5) and Soares dos Reis (save €5); day two Palácio da Bolsa at 25 % plus Serralves at 20 %; day three two free municipal museums and a cellar tasting. Assuming Bolsa and Serralves cost in the mid-teens each, the card returns €18 to €22 against a €16 three-day price. Worth it, but only if you genuinely walk into six paid venues in three days.

Andante 24 h, Andante Tour or single tickets?

Porto’s public transport uses the Andante system, shared by Metro do Porto, STCP buses and CP suburban trains. Fares are by zone: Z2 is the minimum and covers the two central zones, which include the old town, Boavista, Campanhã and Gaia across the bridge. The airport sits four zones out, so an airport ride is a Z4 fare.

Break-even for Andante 24 Z2 is four rides in a day (4 × €1.40 = €5.60 versus €5.15). Andante Tour 1 at €7.75 beats singles only if the airport transfer (€2.30) plus at least four Z2 rides fall inside the same 24 hours; otherwise a Z4 single for the airport and Z2 singles afterwards is cheaper. Tour 3 at €16.55 costs about the same as three Andante 24 Z2 days plus the card (€16.05), so it wins only when the airport or trips beyond Z2 are in the plan.

The Metro do Porto fares page still shows Z3 at €1.80 and Z4 at €2.25 with a 2024 date; the Andante Azul page lists €1.85 and €2.30. Budget on the higher figures.

Where to buy the Porto Card and Andante cards

When on sale, the Porto Card is bought online on the official Porto and North booking site and exchanged for a physical card at the airport or Sé tourist office, or bought over the counter at those two plus Trindade and the Porto Welcome Center. Locations and hours per visitporto.travel:

• Sé tourist office, Calçada Dom Pedro Pitões, in the medieval tower beside the cathedral: 09:00–19:00 June to September, 09:00–18:00 October to May.
• Trindade tourist office, inside Trindade metro station: same seasonal hours.
• Porto Welcome Center, Praça de Almeida Garrett 27, opposite São Bento station: same seasonal hours.
• Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport tourist office, arrivals level: daily 09:00–18:00, closed over lunch.

Andante Tour cards are sold at Andante shops (Trindade, Campanhã and other main stations), CP ticket counters with Andante sales and marked Payshop agents, per andante.pt; the airport tourist desk also sells them. Andante Azul cards come from the blue machines at every metro station: choose the zone count, pay, validate before boarding.

Walking: the Sé office is five minutes uphill from São Bento station and ten from Cais da Ribeira; the Welcome Center faces São Bento. Metro: São Bento (line D) or Trindade (all lines). All four offices are at street level; the Sé office has a step at the door.

Card partners within a short walk of the Sé office

• Sé do Porto: next door; the cloister charges a small fee, the nave is free. See the Porto attractions guide.

• Palácio da Bolsa and Igreja de São Francisco: twelve minutes west; both were 25 % partners.
• Torre dos Clérigos and Livraria Lello: fifteen minutes uphill past São Bento; one is a 50 % partner, the other is not.
• Gaia cellars: across the lower deck of the bridge, ten to twenty minutes on foot; see port wine cellars.

Checked in practice

• Check the official sales page the week before travel. If the suspension notice is gone and prices are listed, the card is back.
• A Porto Card discount is claimed at the venue till, not online. Buy Clérigos or Bolsa tickets at the counter with the card in hand; pre-booked online tickets are charged full price.
• Carry the physical card. Staff write the activation time on it, so a phone photo will not do.
• At the airport the tourist desk closes for lunch; the Andante machines do not. Buy Andante first if you land at midday.
• Validate Andante on every boarding, including changes. Inspections on line E from the airport are frequent.
• Cellar discounts apply to the standard visit, rarely to premium tastings. Ask which tier the percentage covers.
