What this site is

Searching for a Porto river cruise throws up a wall of near identical listings. Six bridges, one hour, around €18, a hundred sellers. What is missing is the part that decides whether the hour is worth it: which quay the boat leaves from, whether the commentary is a live guide or a tinny recording, which side of the deck faces the bridges on the way upstream, and when the queue at Cais da Ribeira turns into forty minutes of standing in the sun.

That gap is the reason this site exists. Each guide answers the questions a traveller asks in the twenty minutes before paying: what it costs, where it starts, when to go, what can go wrong, and what the cheaper or better alternative is. Where a number matters, we name the page we took it from and the month we checked it.

Start with the Six Bridges cruise if you have one afternoon, the Douro Valley day trip if you have a full day, or things to do in Porto if you are still planning the trip.

How we research and write

• Prices and opening hours come from official pages. Operator sites, museum sites, Metro do Porto, STCP and CP. The source is named in the same sentence or in the table caption, with the month we checked it.
• Numbers we cannot verify do not get invented. If an operator publishes no price, we say the price is not published rather than repeating a figure from a reseller.
• Downsides are part of the review. Wind on the upper deck, upselling at the quay, weak audio, tanks that look tired, cellars that funnel you into a shop. Leaving those out would make the page useless.
• Partner links never change the ranking. No operator can pay to be recommended, moved up a list, or have a criticism removed.
• Pages are re-checked before each season, because Porto changes its fares and timetables between the summer and winter schedules.

How the site pays for itself

Some links to booking pages are affiliate links. If you book after following one, the platform pays us a commission and you pay the same price as anyone else. Those links carry a `nofollow sponsored` attribute and pass through a `/go/` redirect so they are easy to identify.

Our current booking partner is GetYourGuide. We also review Civitatis, Viator, Klook and Musement, and we say plainly on those pages that we earn from one of the five. Where booking direct with the operator is cheaper or more flexible, the guide says so, because a reader who feels misled does not come back.

We take no payment for reviews, no sponsored posts, and no paid placements in any list on this site.

Languages and coverage

Guides are published in English, Portuguese, French, German, Spanish and Polish. Each language version is adapted rather than machine translated: fares stay in euro, transport advice matches how people in that language actually search, and official Portuguese names are kept with a translation on first use.

Operator and booking platform reviews are published in English and Portuguese only. Those pages depend on Portuguese sources that change often, and we would rather maintain two accurate versions than six stale ones.

Corrections

Prices change, piers move, museums close for refurbishment. If something here is out of date or wrong, write to hello@porto.boats with the page and what you saw. Corrections to fares, hours and meeting points are made within a week, and larger rewrites are queued for the next seasonal pass.

If you run one of the companies covered here and a fact about your operation is wrong, send the official page that shows the correct figure and we will update the review. We will not remove a fair criticism, but we will always correct an error.
