Cruzeiros Douro describes itself as a tour operator specialising in Douro cruises and Douro tourism, selling what it calls the largest offer on the market. It is a booking and operating business rather than a shipping company with a public fleet register: the site lists no named vessels for the six bridges cruise, only that it uses a typical rabelo boat.

Departures run every 30 minutes: 10:00 to 18:00 from April to September, and 10:00 to 16:00 from October to March, according to the same page. Children aged 4 to 12 pay half fare and babies under 3 travel free.

The two-price structure is the single most useful thing this operator publishes. The same company, the same boat class and the same route cost €18 from Gaia and €20 from Ribeira. Booking with Cruzeiros Douro

For the bridges cruise, buying at the Gaia pier is straightforward outside July and August. The Gaia bank has more kiosks than Ribeira, so a sold-out slot across the river usually still has space here.

What to check before and after paying

1. Which pier your ticket is for. The Gaia and Ribeira fares differ by €2 and the tickets are not interchangeable.
2. Whether you have a time or a date. The company's own page says the online reservation carries no departure time.
3. The exact pier location on Avenida Diogo Leite. That avenue runs the length of the Gaia waterfront and several operators use different pontoons along it.
4. The child ages on the booking. Half fare applies from 4 to 12, free under 3.
5. The cancellation terms, which are not stated on the product page and should be confirmed in writing.
6. That the office is closed at weekends, so a Saturday problem has to be solved at the pier.

• The Shopping Brasília office is nowhere near the river. Do not go there to buy a same-day cruise ticket; go to the pier.
• From Jardim do Morro metro, take the Teleférico de Gaia down or walk the zigzag path in about 10 minutes to reach Avenida Diogo Leite.
• From Cais da Ribeira, the lower deck of Ponte Luís I is a flat five-minute crossing, which is what buys you the €2 saving.
• Arrive 20 minutes early with an online reservation, not 10. Without a fixed time you are queuing for a slot, not just for boarding.
• The audio guide runs the same four-language loop and is hard to hear on a full deck. Learn the bridge order before you board.
• Bring a layer. The river runs several degrees cooler than the quay and there is little shade on the benches after 15:00.
• No toilet on the small rabelo boats and no stop in 50 minutes. Use the facilities at the Gaia cable-car station first.
• Weekend office closure is the practical risk. Take a photo of your booking and note the WhatsApp number before you travel.
