Douro Charter review: yacht charter from Marina do Freixo, priced per boat

Who Douro Charter actually is

Douro Charter is a trading name rather than a standalone company. Its own “Sobre Nós” page states that the brand belongs to B’SPORT, which has managed nautical and recreational infrastructure since 2005 and has operated as a maritime tourism company since 2008. That matters when you are handing over four figures: the operating history sits with the parent, not with the charter brand.

The base is Marina do Freixo, on the N108 riverside road in Campanhã parish below Ponte do Freixo. VisitPortugal’s operator listing gives the address as Estrada Nacional 108 (Marina do Freixo), 4300-316 Porto, with registration number 237/2010 and contact through +351 225 309 040 or +351 938 724 680. The marina’s own site lists Douro Charter among its resident businesses.

The fleet, per the official Frota page

• Jeanneau Prestige 42S: 10 passengers, 850 hp, flybridge.
• Beneteau Trawler 42: 10 passengers, twin 300 hp, flybridge. Slow and stable, the most comfortable of the group at conversation speed.
• Rodman 1250: 10 passengers, 860 hp, flybridge.
• Princess 56: 14 passengers, twin 800 hp, quoted at 33 knots. The largest passenger capacity in the fleet.
• Azimut 62: 12 passengers, twin 1,000 hp. Douro Charter’s flagship and its most expensive slot.
• A traditional rabelo boat licensed for 65 guests, sold for onboard celebrations rather than sightseeing.
• A Princess 45 also appears on the fleet page without a stated capacity, and the company text mentions an Azimut 68.

Each vessel carries a skipper and a sailor, and the company puts the legal maximum per boat at 10 to 14 people.

Douro Charter prices and products

Unusually for the premium end of the Porto market, Douro Charter publishes a full price grid instead of hiding behind “prices on request”. Everything below is per boat, so divide by your headcount before comparing it with a shared cruise ticket.

The two hour cruise page presents the same €360 slot as “from €36 per person for groups up to 10”, which is simply the boat price divided by full capacity. That figure only holds if you fill the boat. Four people on the same yacht pay €90 each, and the €18 Six Bridges Cruise starts looking sensible again.

Included in a cruise, per the operator’s two hour product page: crew, fuel and a welcome drink. Not included, per the company terms: private dock fees, night navigation taxes and any meals on board, all payable when the service begins. On day and multi-day rentals the terms are stricter still, with fuel for only one hour of navigation covered, half days capped at four hours of use and full days at eight.

The route

The standard two hour circuit runs downstream from Marina do Freixo under Ponte do Freixo, Ponte de São João, Ponte Maria Pia and Ponte do Infante, pauses in front of the UNESCO-listed riverfront, passes the Dom Luís I Bridge and continues under Ponte da Arrábida toward the river mouth before turning back, per the operator’s own itinerary. Starting from Freixo means you cover all six bridges early and spend the middle of the slot in the best scenery, which the marinas downstream cannot match.

What travellers say: a thin public record

This is the weak point, and it should be said plainly. Douro Charter has a Tripadvisor page but no reviews on it, and sat at #175 of 176 Porto boat tours and water sports when checked in September 2026. A ranking that low is a function of having no reviews, not of bad ones, but the practical effect is the same: there is no public feedback trail to read before you commit.

The brand does appear on distribution platforms, including a “Douro Private Yacht Charter” listing under Marina do Freixo on GetYourGuide, and equivalents on Musement and Getmyboat. Those carry their own ratings, none verifiable at the time of writing.

None of this means the boats are bad. B’SPORT is a long-established marina operator and the fleet is real and photographed. It does mean you are buying on the strength of the price list and a phone call, not on hundreds of strangers’ experiences.

Booking Douro Charter: direct, platform, or compare first

The official site books through an embedded FareHarbor widget, and there is a phone line on every page. For a specific hull on a specific date, calling is faster: the fleet is small and availability shifts with private events.

• Confirm in writing which boat is assigned, with the model name, before paying anything.
• Ask what the welcome drink actually is and whether food can be added, since meals are excluded by default.
• Ask whether the river mouth leg is included in your slot or dropped if the harbour master restricts the bar.
• Get the cancellation window in writing. The site does not publish one; platform listings often carry a 24 hour free-cancellation rule that the direct booking may not match.
• Check whether night navigation taxes apply to a late sunset slot in June.

The honest comparison for a group of 10 in September 2026: €270 with ZapDouro, €360 with Douro Charter on a Prestige 42S, same marina, same two hours. Douro Charter earns the difference only if you want a bigger hull, a longer slot at a published rate, or capacity for 12 to 14.

Practical checks before you go

• Marina do Freixo has no metro. Budget 10 to 15 minutes by taxi from São Bento station and add buffer at rush hour on the N108.
• Arrive 15 minutes before departure, as the operator’s own cruise page asks. Pontoon gates are locked and need a crew member.
• The marina toilet block is the only facility before boarding, and reviewers of other operators at the same marina have flagged its condition. Use the one at Palácio do Freixo next door if you are early.
• Sea legs past Foz do Douro depend on the harbour master opening the bar. From October to April assume the boat turns at the mouth, and do not pay extra for a promise of the Atlantic.
