Who Civitatis are

Civitatis was founded in Madrid in 2008 by Alberto Gutiérrez Pascual, for a market the German and American platforms served badly: people who want to book in Spanish or Portuguese. Its Wikipedia page, checked September 2026, describes more than 97,000 activities across over 4,270 destinations and around 6,500 local operators.

Its own About page calls it the leading platform for activities, day trips and guided tours in the most visited destinations of the Spanish-speaking market, and advertises round-the-clock help, a satisfaction score of 9.10 out of 10 from more than five million reviews, and apps for iOS and Android (checked September 2026).

Two structural details matter more than the marketing. Roughly a third of sales come through travel agencies rather than direct, per Wikipedia, which is why the catalogue skews to guided formats an agent can explain by phone. And Civitatis has been cashflow positive since it started, so it never had to buy market share. That shows up as thinner supply and steadier prices.

Who you are contracting with

Read this before you assume you are dealing with the platform. Civitatis states in its general conditions that most contracts are formed between the user and Civitatis, but that with certain providers it limits itself to offering its website as an online platform, in which case you contract directly with the provider. Which of the two applies is set out on the activity page, and it changes who you chase if the boat does not sail.

How booking, vouchers, payment and cancellation work

Bookings and payment are both immediate, by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal, per the general conditions (read September 2026). Some providers allow a part payment with the balance due at the activity, common on day trips and rare on the cruise. Prices are shown with tax included, in euro or one of six other currencies.

Cancellation is per activity, not per platform

Civitatis does not run a single house rule. The general conditions say the specific cancellation conditions apply to each service, establishing the cancellation time and any penalty, and that those conditions sit in the activity description and in the confirmation email. On the Porto Six Bridges listing, checked September 2026, the line reads free cancellation up to 24 hours before the activity starts, with no refund after that or for a no-show.

The apps are worth having for one reason: the voucher works without signal, and coverage on the Ribeira pontoons under Ponte Luís I is unreliable.

What Civitatis lists for Porto, and the gap

Porto shows 82 tours and experiences on Civitatis (September 2026). Open the cruises and boat trips category and there is one product in it.

So the price band for Porto boats on Civitatis is a single point: €20. There is no sunset slot, no francesinha combination, no private charter, no sailing and no jet ski. The larger platforms list the same 50-minute route from €18, so Civitatis is also the more expensive place to buy the one product it has.

Where it competes is on land. The Douro region full day at €89 is a guided coach trip to Amarante and Pinhão, above the €54 to €55 bundles the bigger platforms sell, but with a Portuguese-speaking guide as standard rather than as an option. That premium is what you are paying for.

What travellers say

The Porto cruise listing carries 15,454 reviews at 8.30 out of 10 on Civitatis (September 2026). That is a large sample and a middling score by the platform’s own standards, where the day trips on the same page sit above 9.00.

The gap is the same one every platform shows on this route. The Six Bridges cruise is a 50-minute loop shared with several hundred people on a busy afternoon, with recorded commentary rather than a guide. Reviewers who booked it as a cheap way to see Ponte Luís I from the water rate it well; those who expected a guided experience rate it down, and this listing says the information comes through a phone app.

The excursion scores are the stronger signal: 9.10 from 548 reviews on the Douro day and 9.20 from 627 on the Fátima and Coimbra day.

If your only booking is the standard cruise and you want the flow in Portuguese, the €2 is a reasonable price for that. If you want to choose between operators, Civitatis cannot give you the choice.

Its real advantage is elsewhere on the page: free walking tours, which the big platforms carry inconsistently, and full-day excursions with a Portuguese-speaking guide by default. Booking a cruise, a free tour and a Douro day in one basket and one language is a convenience a cheaper cruise elsewhere does not replace.
