Viator review: Porto boat tours, and the cancellation policy behind the headline

Viator is the tours and activities arm of Tripadvisor, founded in 1995 and bought by Tripadvisor in 2014 for around $200 million. It carries the widest catalogue of any platform in this comparison, including most Porto river operators. It also runs three different cancellation policies, and knowing which one your boat sits under matters more than the price.

Who Viator are, and where Tripadvisor fits

Viator was founded in 1995, which makes it the oldest platform in this comparison by more than a decade. Tripadvisor agreed to buy it in July 2014 and completed the deal that August for approximately $200 million, substantially in cash, per Tripadvisor’s own investor release and contemporary reporting by Skift. At the time Viator was based in San Francisco with offices in Las Vegas, London and Sydney, and carried more than 20,000 bookable tours.

Since then the catalogue has grown by more than an order of magnitude. Viator’s site states over 345,000 things to do (checked September 2026). Tripadvisor Inc. owns both brands and runs them as separate sites, with Viator supply appearing on Tripadvisor listings. For a Porto boat operator that means one listing can reach two of the largest travel audiences in the world, which is why almost everyone on the Douro is on it.

How booking, vouchers and the three cancellation policies work

You pay in full at booking and receive a voucher. Viator’s own partner glossary defines the voucher as the ticket the traveller presents to the tour operator, in paper or electronic form, and the operator decides which it accepts. Two confirmation types exist, and the difference is not cosmetic.

  • Instant confirmation: the booking is accepted immediately with no input from the operator, and the voucher issues at once
  • Manual confirmation: the operator confirms or rejects each request, which can stay pending for up to 72 hours, and you are charged only once it is confirmed

That 72-hour window is the practical catch on Porto charters and small sailing boats, which are often manual. If you are booking a boat for a Saturday and it is Thursday evening, a pending request is not a reservation.

Standard, custom, and all sales final

Viator runs three policies, described in the same partner glossary (read September 2026), and the table below is the whole of it. What matters is that nothing on the search results page tells you which one you are looking at.

Viator’s three cancellation categories, per its partner glossary, September 2026
PolicyShare of catalogueWhat you get back
StandardAbout 85%Full refund if cancelled more than 24 h before the travel date; nothing inside 24 h
All sales finalAbout 10%Nothing; no cancellations or amendments without a 100% penalty
CustomThe remainderA partial refund set by the supplier, shrinking as the start time approaches

Support is advertised as 24/7 and reached through the booking. Standard cancellations refund automatically to the original payment method. The app holds the voucher offline, the only feature that matters on a quay.

What Viator lists for Porto boats

Viator’s Porto destination carries the widest river selection of the five platforms we review: the standard Six Bridges cruise from multiple operators, Douro river cruises that add drinks and snacks, private boat tours with complimentary drinks, and full-day Douro valley trips with a boat leg. Where GetYourGuide concentrates on a handful of very high-volume listings, Viator lists the long tail of small operators.

We do not print Viator prices we could not read: its listing pages block automated requests. The figures below are market bands from operator sites and competing platforms, checked September 2026. Treat the Viator page itself as the source of truth when you book.

Porto boat price bands to expect, from operator sites and competing platforms, September 2026
Product typeMarket bandWhat sets the price
Six Bridges cruise, 50 minutes€18 to €20Operator, quay and time of day; the route is identical
Cruise with drinks, snacks or a cellar visit€25 to €40What is included on land, not on the water
Sunset and small-group river trips€35 to €60Boat size and whether a crew member guides in person
Private boat hire, 2 hoursFrom about €150 per groupGroup size, drinks, and whether the price is per boat or per person
Douro valley day with a cruise leg€54 to €89Coach, lunch, tastings and the length of the river section

Per person against per boat is where Viator charter listings catch people out, because small operators write them inconsistently. Read the inclusions block, not the headline number.

What travellers say, and how to read it

Viator carries the largest review volume in the sector; at the 2014 acquisition it already held more than 600,000 traveller reviews, photos and videos. That depth is the reason to open it even if you book elsewhere: where six operators sell the same 50 minutes, review history is the only thing separating them.

The themes on Porto river products are the ones every platform shows: recorded commentary rotating through several languages and hard to follow on a windy deck, boarding congestion at Cais da Ribeira in the afternoon, and disappointment when the rabelo in the photograph turns out to be a motorised replica.

Complaints specific to the platform cluster elsewhere: slow resolution when the operator and Viator disagree about who cancelled, and refunds refused on listings the traveller had not realised were all sales final.

Viator compared with GetYourGuide, Civitatis, Klook and Musement

Disclosure before the table: porto.boats is a GetYourGuide affiliate and earns a commission on bookings made through our links. We are not paid by Viator, Civitatis, Klook or Musement. Read the first row with that in mind, and compare the same boat on both of the big two before booking.

Head to head with GetYourGuide, the split is clean. Viator carries more operators, especially small charters and drinks-included cruises, and its reviews reach back further. GetYourGuide concentrates volume on fewer listings, which produces deeper ratings on the one route most visitors book.

The tiebreaker is the cancellation category. On GetYourGuide the question is whether you bought the upgrade. On Viator the question is whether your listing is one of the 85%, and nothing on the search results page answers it. Open the listing, find the cancellation line, and only then compare prices.

Field notes for booking a Porto boat on Viator

  • Find the cancellation line on the listing itself: standard, custom or all sales final behave completely differently
  • Board by operator name; pontoon staff at Cais de Gaia have never heard of your booking site
  • Save the voucher offline before you walk down to the river, where signal under the bridge is poor
  • On charter listings, confirm whether the price is per boat or per person before comparing anything

If the operator cancels for weather, get it in writing at the quay. The refund path for a supplier cancellation is faster when the case already contains the operator’s own message, and slower when it becomes an argument about who cancelled what.

Our verdict

What works

  • The deepest Porto river catalogue of the five platforms, including small charter operators
  • Review history reaching back further than any competitor, and connected to Tripadvisor
  • Standard policy gives a full refund up to 24 hours before the travel date on about 85% of products
  • Instant confirmation on most mainstream cruise listings
  • 24/7 support and an app that holds the voucher offline

What to watch

  • Around 10% of listings are all sales final and refund nothing, which the search page does not flag
  • Marketing of free cancellation was criticised by Truth in Advertising in November 2025 as too broad
  • Manual-confirmation listings can stay pending for up to 72 hours
  • Tripadvisor ratings shown alongside Viator products come from the same corporate group
  • Per-person and per-boat pricing is written inconsistently across small charter listings

Questions travellers ask

Is Viator legit for Porto boat tours?

Yes. Viator has operated since 1995 and has been owned by Tripadvisor since August 2014, when the deal closed at about $200 million. It does not run the boats: it resells slots from Porto operators, and the operator name is on your voucher. The thing to check is which of its three cancellation policies your listing uses.

Is this the official Viator website?

No. porto.boats is an independent guide to Porto boat trips. We do not sell tickets and we have no commercial relationship with Viator or Tripadvisor. We are a GetYourGuide affiliate, which is disclosed on every page of this site.

What is Viator’s cancellation policy?

There are three. The standard policy, about 85% of products per Viator’s partner glossary, allows cancellation up to 24 hours before the travel date for a full refund and nothing after that. All sales final, around 10%, refunds nothing at all. Custom policies are written by the supplier and give a partial refund that shrinks as the start time nears.

How long does a Viator refund take?

Standard cancellations are processed automatically back to the payment method used. Viator does not publish a single timeframe on the pages we could read, so treat any specific number you see quoted elsewhere with caution and check the confirmation email for the terms attached to your booking.

Is Viator owned by Tripadvisor?

Yes. Tripadvisor announced the agreement in July 2014 and completed the acquisition in August 2014 for approximately $200 million, substantially in cash. The two run as separate sites within the same group, and Viator supply appears on Tripadvisor listings.

Viator or GetYourGuide for a Porto cruise?

Viator lists more operators, including small charters, and has longer review history. GetYourGuide concentrates on fewer listings and therefore has deeper ratings on the standard Six Bridges route. Note that we earn commission from GetYourGuide and not from Viator, so open the same boat on both before deciding.

How much does a Porto boat trip cost on Viator?

Viator blocks automated reading of its listing pages, so we do not quote its prices. The market band for the 50-minute Six Bridges route is €18 to €20 across operators and platforms, cruises with drinks or a cellar visit run €25 to €40, and private hire starts around €150 per group (operator sites, September 2026).
