GetYourGuide review: booking Porto boat tours, and what the 24-hour rule really means

Who GetYourGuide are, and what we get out of it

GetYourGuide was founded in 2009 in Zurich by Johannes Reck, Tao Tao, Tobias Rein, Martin Sieber and Pascal Mathis, and moved to Berlin in 2012 to reach venture capital. Its Wikipedia company page, checked September 2026, describes more than 1,000 employees, over 150,000 experiences and roughly 20,000 supply partners.

The funding history explains the behaviour. SoftBank’s Vision Fund led a $484 million round in 2019, and in October 2025 the company reported around €1 billion in annual sales and its first profit, per the same page. A marketplace under that expectation optimises for conversion, which is why a Porto search returns the same three or four cruise products first.

The affiliate relationship, stated plainly

porto.boats earns a commission when a reader books a GetYourGuide activity through our links. We do not set prices, we never take your payment, and you pay what you would pay typing the address yourself. What the arrangement buys GetYourGuide is placement. Read the comparison table below as the counterweight, and check a second platform before booking anything above €50.

How booking, vouchers and cancellation actually work

The flow is standard: pick a date, a time and a party size, pay in full by card or wallet, and receive a voucher by email that also sits in your account and in the app. For Porto departures that voucher is the ticket, and every operator we checked accepts it on a phone screen.

The 24-hour window, and what the paid upgrade sells

GetYourGuide’s own insurance product document for its paid Cancellation Upgrade, hosted on the company CDN (version dated January 2023, read September 2026), draws the shape of the standard policy clearly. The upgrade covers cancelling within 24 hours of the start time and no later than 60 minutes before it, and it explicitly excludes any booking cancelled more than 24 hours before the start. In plain terms: on a standard listing the free window closes 24 hours out, and the add-on sells back the final day.

• Read the cancellation line on the listing itself, not the homepage promise: charters and small-group sailings often set stricter terms
• Check whether the price is per person or per boat, which is where charter listings catch people out
• Check the meeting point against the quay name, because Cais da Ribeira and Cais de Gaia are a bridge apart

Prices are shown in the currency you select, and any conversion fee is your bank’s rather than the platform’s, so compare the euro figure. Support runs through the Help Centre and the booking itself, with chat and email everywhere and phone only in some markets.

What GetYourGuide actually lists for Porto boats

Porto supply on GetYourGuide is concentrated on one product: the 50-minute Six Bridges cruise, sold by several operators from both banks under near-identical descriptions. Everything else is that hull with something bolted on, or a full day out to the Douro valley.

Above that the listings thin out fast. Private charters start around €150 per group for two hours per the DouroBoatman site, shared sailing about €45 per person per the Don’t Worry Douro site, and jet skis from €59 on GetYourGuide (September 2026). The platform carries fewer of these than the operators’ own pages do.

What travellers say, and what the ratings hide

The flagship Six Bridges listing carries 16,015 ratings at 4.2 on GetYourGuide (September 2026), the deepest pool of any Porto boat product on any platform we checked. The sunset and cellar version sits at 4.0 from 5,544 ratings; valley day trips run higher at 4.7.

The recurring complaints are consistent across operators rather than specific to one. Loudspeaker commentary that cycles through four or five languages and is hard to follow on a windy deck. Boarding queues at the Ribeira pontoons in the middle of the afternoon. And the gap between marketing photographs of sailing rabelos and the motorised replica that actually leaves the quay.

The praise is equally consistent: for €18 and 50 minutes few cities offer a comparable view, and families rate the rabelo boats highly.

GetYourGuide compared with Civitatis, Viator, Klook and Musement

Disclosure again, because it belongs here and not only in the lead: porto.boats is paid by GetYourGuide and by none of the other four platforms in this table. Judge the row accordingly.

On Porto boats the real choice is GetYourGuide or Viator, the only two carrying a full spread of operators. Civitatis is worth opening if you read Portuguese and are also booking free walking tours. Klook and Musement are in the table because readers ask, not because they list much on the Douro.

Where GetYourGuide is worse, say so: the €18 cruise is no cheaper than the quay kiosk, the francesinha combos are marked up against booking boat and lunch separately, and the paid upgrade sells flexibility the listing does not include. Where it is better is harder to argue with: 16,015 ratings on one cruise is a decision-grade sample.

Field notes for booking a Porto boat through a platform

• Board by operator name, not by platform: pontoon staff have never heard of your booking site, and the operator name is on the voucher
• Arrive 20 minutes early in summer, 10 minutes off-season; boarding closes before the stated departure
• Sit on the left going upstream from Cais da Ribeira for the cellar frontage, on the right coming back
• Under-4s travel free with most operators, but the age cut-off is the operator’s term, not the platform’s

Weather cancellations are the operator’s call, not the platform’s. Ask for written confirmation at the quay, then open the case in the app with that message attached: refunds move faster with the operator’s own words in the file.
